Ultrascale Simulations of Non-smooth Granular Dynamics
نویسندگان
چکیده
This article presents new algorithms for massively parallel granular dynamics simulations on distributed memory architectures using a domain partitioning approach. Collisions are modelled with hard contacts in order to hide their micro-dynamics and thus to extend the time and length scales that can be simulated. The multi-contact problem is solved using a nonlinear block Gauss-Seidel method that is conforming to the subdomain structure. The parallel algorithms employ a sophisticated protocol between processors that delegate algorithmic tasks such as contact treatment and position integration uniquely and robustly to the processors. Communication overhead is minimized through aggressive message aggregation, leading to excellent strong and weak scaling. The robustness and scalability is assessed on three clusters including two peta-scale supercomputers with up to 458 752 processor cores. The simulations can reach unprecedented resolution of up to ten billion (10) non-spherical particles and contacts.

Applications for Ultrascale Computing
Studies of real complex physical and engineering problems represented by multiscale and multiphysics computer simulations have an increasing demand for computing power. The demand is driven by the increasing scales and complexity of the scientific problems investigated or the time constraints. Ultrascale computing systems could offer the computing power required to solve these problems. Future ...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation of Granular Column Collapses with Pressure-Dependent Viscoplastic Model using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic Method
This paper presents a numerical analysis of granular column collapse phenomenon using a two-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics model and a local constitutive law proposed by Jop et al. This constitutive law, which is based on the viscoplastic behaviour of dense granular material flows, is characterized by an apparent viscosity depending both on the local strain rate and the local press...
متن کاملRole of friction in pattern formation in oscillated granular layers.
Particles in granular flows are often modeled as frictionless (smooth) inelastic spheres; however, there exist no frictionless grains, just as there are no elastic grains. Our molecular dynamics simulations reveal that friction is essential for realistic modeling of vertically oscillated granular layers: simulations of frictionless particles yield patterns with an onset at a container accelerat...
متن کاملRheology of two- and three-dimensional granular mixtures under uniform shear flow: Enskog kinetic theory versus molecular dynamics simulations
The rheological properties for dilute and moderately dense granular binary mixtures of smooth, inelastic hard disks/spheres under uniform shear flow in steady state conditions are reported. The results are based on the Enskog kinetic theory, numerically solved by a dense gas extension of the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo method for dilute gases. These results are confronted to the ones also obt...
متن کاملSurface roughness effects in granular matter: influence on angle of repose and the absence of segregation.
We investigate the effect of nanoscale variations in the surface roughness of individual particles on macroscale granular flow characteristics. Experiments were conducted in circular rotating tumblers with smooth and rough 2 and 3 mm steel particles. The smooth beads had a rms surface roughness of approximately 30 to 60 nm; rough beads had a surface roughness of approximately 240 to 350 nm. The...
